Brigham Young University is owned by The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. As such, we
have the opportunity and the obligation to explore the relationships between
faith and professional education, the sacred and the secular. We are to be ÒbilingualÓ in a way
described by former Prophet and Church President, Spencer W. Kimball in his
ÒSecond Century Address.Ó (Full
text here)
Your double heritage and dual concerns with the secular and
the spiritual require you to be "bilingual." As LDS scholars, you must
speak with authority and excellence to your professional colleagues in the
language of scholarship, and you must also be literate in the language of
spiritual things. We must be more bilingual, in that sense, to fulfill our
promise in the second century of BYU.
MBA 593R
is a seminar series designed to not only provide you with the opportunity to
learn from the experience and perspective of high-level, prominent business
leaders, but to explore applications of the unique goals of business education
at BYU as well.
Each
month this fall, three executives will be featured. Each executive will be invited to speak to you from their
experience and with application to current business issues, based upon an
underlying theme for each monthÕs lectures.
At the
end of each month, students will gather in their respective programs to discuss
how the theme and the messages they have heard help them better approach their
own professional development. Students
will have readings from talks and addresses given by LDS Church General
Authorities and BYU administrators to help focus the discussion in each of the
three months.
The readings for this course are as follows:

This course has been designed as an enriching exercise that
will allow you to explore the unique blend of the secular and the sacred at
BYU. As such, we expect your
attendance because of your interest in the subject and its inherent worth to
you. We will ask you to write a one page response to each of the three questions in
preparation for each gathering with your classmates (Oct. 2, Oct. 30, Dec.
4). We will collect your essays at
that time. We will also ask you to
report which sessions you attended at the end of the semester.
We
hope that all lecturers gain a favorable impression of the students, faculty,
and programs of the Marriott School.
As a lecture participant, you are helping us host these lecturers. The lecturersÕ
perceptions of Marriott School students as potential employees will be framed
in great part by you. While
many of these guidelines will be obvious to you, please:
1.
Wear business professional dress to each
lecture.
2. Sit
toward the front of the auditorium
3. Refrain
from bringing food and beverages into the auditorium
4. Arrive
on time and do not leave early
5. Sit
in auditorium chairs rather than on the steps or on the floor in the back of
the auditorium (do not bring in additional chairs)
6. PLEASE DO NOT USE LAPTOPS, CELL
PHONES, OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
